The big "C" : the Beast named Nawi

I have a strong family history of Cancer. Particularly from my Mother's side. My grandmother died of Leukemia, my aunt was diagnosed with colon cancer as well as few other relatives.

Besides rusty furniture, gemstones and his watch collection, there is nothing my father loves more than food . When he started losing weight, we knew something was off. He lost his appetite to eat, spends more time on the bed sleeping and he cuts off his social life. We thought he went into depression. He showed all symptoms of depression. He was moody and unfriendly. A Beast to be exact!

One day, I received a call from mom saying that Dad could not control his bladder, he shiver until the whole bed was shaky, he had high fever, his body and eyes were yellow! We brought him to a private hospital. Sadly, they refused to treat him because he was critically ill and he had no medical history at the hospital. I was so frustrated but there was nothing much we could do but to move him to a government hospital where his records are kept.

He was treated by Gastro Specialists. They spotted problems around his bile duct area. Specifically, a narrowing of his bile duct. For months, specialists could not find the root cause of his problem. He had to go through numerous times of ERCP procedures to put stents at his bile duct. This is to create a better pathway for the bile to run through his bile duct to the liver. The procedure was done through his mouth and each time, he came out from the OT with a bloody nose, mouth and an irritated throat. But hear me this, he never once complained. It was bad and I can only imagine how much he suffered. This went on for more than 6 months, still...no root cause and the stent kept slipping out from his bile duct. They had to repeat the same procedure over and over again. He felt a little better after each treatment but he kept getting back his fever. We were unhappy that his symptoms persists and knew that we had to try harder to cure him. Finally, the Dr. suggested that we take him for a second opinion at Selayang hospital.

A new chapter begins at Selayang hospital. They immediately suspected that something was wrong with his liver which could have caused the narrowing of his bile duct, his bloated stomach and his yellow skin. They were right. His liver shrunk. Now, no wonder Selayang is known for their liver specialists! Next thing we know, they suggested for my dad to go through a major surgery to remove part of his liver and to create a new "Highway" for his bile. That was how the Dr explained it in Layman.

No surgery is done without risk. At his age, the surgery was life threatening but we felt that he should go for it. It was a risk but chances of surviving was higher compared to non surgery. No surgery confirms death at that point. The Dr had to make sure that he fully understands the risks, the post surgery struggle and recovery. The Dr wanted to reassure his decision. She asked him "En.Nawi, tell me..how long more do you want to live?" My dad said, "10 years or more..I want to see my grandchildren grow up". There and then the Dr said " Ok En. Nawi..then we must proceed with the surgery. Most of my patients answered "Few more years" but you uncle, YOU have the spirit to survive. Let's do this together". My dad smiled and left the consultation room in full confidence.

Getting ready for surgery

It's the moment of truth. Dad went into surgery. We waited anxiously. It was supposed to be an 8 hours surgery but it was way longer, it felt like a year! A lot of things went into my head, my eyes started to water and then the OT door slides open. There he was with a THUMBS up and a BIG smile to reassure us that he was fine. It was a major relief. My anxiety wear off. I no longer need my Ventolin puffs on standby. It was the beginning of a road to recovery...and so I thought.

On the same day, the Dr called us to update on the result of surgery. My sister was outside with my niece. So, It was only Mom and me. The moment I saw the Dr's face, I knew something was not right. They found a tumor in his liver and very likely Malignant (cancerous). This is not an exaggeration but I literally did not hear anything after that. It felt like a nuclear landed on my head. My head went blank. I literally died for a second and then Mom started crying. I came back to reality. I did not drop a single tear. I was trying to be tough for mom and consoled her but the moment the Dr left, I stepped out from NICU, made sure mom was not around and I cried....and cried. After a while, I went back in to kiss my dad and he asked, "Is everything alright?" I nodded, gave a thumbs up and said "You made it pa" with a smile on my face. He then smiled in relief.

The Dr advised us to keep the news to ourselves until his full recovery. Not to hide it from him but to keep him positive. So we did. I remember crying and getting myself prepared for the worst but believe me, none can prepare for such thing. Nevertheless, his positive and full spirits made it much easier for us. No doubt, there were tough times when he almost wanted to give up but with support, he got back on his feet and fought hard. I remember giving him motivation for his physio, like a mother seeing her child's first steps "Yes pa. you can do it pa! few more steps. Wow! so proud of you!"
It was great seeing his effort. Such feeling that you get after watching a motivational movies/videos where adrenaline rushed through your body, your heart pumping and hands clapping out of excitement like a kid in Disneyland.

Dad had his gloomy days. He even said he wanted to stop fighting. I remember forcing him to do his physio so hard that I felt so bad and went to the hallway to cry and calm myself down. Honestly, it was tough but I am glad I was by his side for support.

Post surgery. Road to recovery

The decision to quit my job was the wisest ever. With the support of my husband, the decision was made overnight. We discussed about our financial but he told me not to worry. I knew it would be a struggle but it was something I had to do or I will forever punish myself. My husband insisted that I follow my heart and I did. I could not thank you enough for your support, Farez.

My father survived his battle. At his age, I would say it is a miracle. He has been cancer free for more than a year now. Dr even said that his liver is growing healthily He is back to his normal life of tossai breakfast, gardening, vintage shopping and saying hello to everyone in the neighborhood. He is now sharing his miracle story with everyone he meets while carrying his complimentary scar to confirm his story.

Our 1st Tossai date post surgery, Cancer FREE!

After 1 year+ of cancer free environment, we recently received a devastating news that my mother's breast biopsy result came back positive for Breast cancer. Nevertheless, she is lucky as she caught it early and did not have to go through radiotherapy/chemotherapy (I will share more about my mom's Breast Cancer story in my other post).

After all that I have been through, I cant stop thinking "I could be next" which puts me into depression.I started getting obsessed with even the slightest symptoms of any illnesses. I would start googling and next thing I know, I am already writing my will and kissing my son like its our last night together!

Whatever it is, I am more conscious on my choices and health. Prevention is better than cure. I started reading about cancer prevention and started eating cancer prevention super foods like brocolli, berries, etc.

I am currently living each day like its my last and spending quality time with my son and family. Remember, our parents is not here forever. Appreciate them while you still can and do not be afraid to show your love.

Love,
Gja

Hello! Mr. Handsome Barista Part 2: Discovering the Nescafe Gold Barista machine

As promised, I would like to share my experience unboxing and setting up the Nescafe Gold Barista Machine. Now, before you scroll further let me warn you that I am clumsy and it is clearly shown in the videos. Try your best to ignore :p

Let us start with the Box...
Front box- Photo of Nescafe Gold barista Machine and a Nescafe Gold Blend pack

At the back of the box, there is a 3 steps guide on how to use the Barista machine. Since it only takes a touch of a button to get the machine to start brewing your coffee, there is not much to read here except that they recommend you to fill in the water tank (fills up to 1 litre of water) with fresh water and pour in your Nescafe Gold Blend coffee into the coffee chamber.

Back of box- 3 steps guide

You can make a minimum of 5 cafe style coffee at home using the Nescafe Gold Barista machine.
(Espresso, Lungo, Americano, Cappucino, Latte macchiato) *The latter 2 coffee style is a milk based coffee. Why minimum you ask? There are varieties of ways  for you to explore your coffee. For instance, just add chocolate shavings/powder into your coffee and Voila! a hot Mocha!
Left of box- minimum of 5 cafe style coffee and endless coffee styles to explore

The Barista machine comes with a manual booklet, a measuring cup (for you to measure your milk when making Cappuccino/Latte), a drip tray and a funnel for you to fill in your coffee into the coffee chamber. The coffee chamber and water tank is attached to the machine.

Rinsing...

When using the machine for he first time, you are required to rinse the machine. The step-by-step guide is available in the manual booklet.
Step 1: Place a container (with a capacity of at least 1/4 Litre) under the  coffee outlet
Step 2: Fill in the water tank with approx 1 Litre water and re-attach the water tank to the machine
Step 3: With a dry hand, Plug in the power plug and switch Power on.
Step 4: Once the power button and Espresso  icon light is a steady green, touch the Espresso button.
Step 5: The rinsing should start and you shall wait until it stops.
Step 6: Remove water from your container.
Step 7: Once rinsing is done, all lights will be steady green. You can now start brewing!

Filling the coffee chamber...

To remove the coffee chamber, push a small button on the top cover and pull the box upwards (It is easily detached. No force is required). Remove cap and fill in Nescafe Gold Blend coffee (careful not to spill! use the funnel provided in the box *which I only discovered after making the video hahaha

My first LATTE!

Use the provided measuring cup to measure your milk (Of course, this is just the recommended amount. You may adjust according to your preference. You can also use condensed milk). The measuring cup comes with an icon of your coffee style for easy reference.

My first Latte Macchiato!

I have got to say that I am super impressed with the taste! The way that the coffee is brewed definitely changes the taste of the coffee. It gives a more intense aroma and the latte definitely tastes like a cafe made coffee! No kidding!

Best part of it all, the smell of a fresh brewed coffee elevates my senses. I feel like I am sitting in a cafe embracing the rich aroma of coffee. I am in a house-cafe heaven!

Now, let me go to get back to my coffee.

Hope the tips helps!

Love,
Gja

Hello! Mr. Handsome Barista Part 1: Man down before 31

Oh hellllllo...OCTOBER!

My favorite month is finally here! It is our birthday month! Yes! Mine and Farez’s.
Our birthday is 20days apart.

His birthday was last Saturday and I have decided to surprise him with a pre-birthday dinner.
He is usually very tired after beating the heavy 2hrs traffic from KLIA. So I made him a Korean bbq at the comfort of his own home, complete with a steamboat. Nyum!

He got home. Opened the door and shouted “Matin!!! I am home!” He didn’t see the “Happy Birthday” set up. He asked “Whats for dinner? I feel like eating something sinful and heavy” (YES!). he walked in and saw the foods and the birthday set up. He smiled and said “Okay.. I’m just gonna wallop everything!! Thank You! I thought everybody forgotten my Birthday!

Little did he know, I had another surprise waiting for him. His birthday gift!! Well, we don’t usually exchange gifts (though the tradition should change hint) but this year is an exception because I know, he would appreciate this gift very much!
(Actually, I might appreciate it more.. grins :p)

Funny thing was, all of us fell asleep after the heavy meal. Did not even make it to 12am for the surprise birthday cake and gift! If you are thinking that the sleeping involved sexy lingerie and a romantic night, you are absolutely WRONG. It involved bloatedness and heavy snoring. Hahahaha. I guess I owe him then? His cake and birthday gift had to wait until the next morning LOL.

So patience come reward...I got him...*drum rolls!!*

A Nescafe Gold Blend Barista Machine!

Perfect! as he stepped out from the room asking for his morning coffee, he saw the Barista machine waiting for him on our dining table. I know...I know...your welcome  :)

Both of us are avid coffee drinker. We, especially Farez needs his dose of coffee in the morning. It is a long 1+ hour drive to work for him. Coffee and good music keeps him sane :p

What caught my attention the most is that the machine does not require a capsule and it works on a touch of a button! You only need to use your Nescafe Gold Blend to get it brewing and because we are already consuming Nescafe Gold Blend at home, it is even more obvious that we need to have the machine! Cafe style coffee at home?
YES PLEASE!!!
P/S: The machine only takes Freeze dried coffee. Hence why you MUST only use Nescafe Gold Blend. I already asked the salesman about using other types of coffee and he clearly said NO. So, don't itchy your hand by pouring other types of coffee. Even Nescafe Classic is a no-no as it oxidizes easily and it would jam up your machine.
Nescafe Gold Blend coffee- Freeze dried coffee. The shape is different compared to regular coffee

I immediately turned to Mr. Google and found that the Nescafe Gold Barista machine is available for purchase on Lazada and 11 Street. It was a bonus for me because Nescafe is having an introductory promotion price at RM249 instead of RM399 and you will get FREE 2 Nescafe Gold Blend (200g)

Without thinking twice, I bought it! I bought the Nescafe Gold Barista Machine and here is a picture of my Mr.Handsome Barista.

Now, go grab a cup and write a love note with my name spelled wrongly :p
Wait for PART 2 as I set up the Nescafe Gold Barista machine and share my experience exploring it

Dutch Lady Mak Kata......

I have been procrastinating to write on this topic for a while. Well, good that I did as just last week I am invited by Dutch Lady to participate in ‘Mak Kata, Saya Anak Bijak’ bloggers contest on the principles and best advice given by my mother as I was growing up.

The phrase ‘Mak Kata’ (which means ‘Mom Says’) was first used in a classic Dutch Lady TV commercial released in 1983, featuring two boys quoting their mother’s pearls of wisdom. Inspired by the iconic ‘80s commercial, Dutch Lady introduced the first ‘Mak Kata’ campaign in 2014. Today Dutch Lady Malaysia is bringing back the familiar ‘Mak Kata’ campaign with a twist to reflect the smartness of kids these days.

So, here it goes...

My mother's advice was fairly simple but it does shape the person I am today. Advice #1, always be nice to people. Treat people with respect as I wish others would to me. Advice #2, be grounded and always help people. Most important advice of all is to be honest with an exception of several white lies to survive and be trustworthy. It goes a long way :)
Mom & Dad

Growing up, I did not get the luxury from my parents and they always thought us to be independent. That was the best advice of all. Mak kata "life is hard and if you don't know how to survive, you will always be invincible". I started being an entrepreneur at the age of 12, selling DIY charm bracelets and custom label sticker name cards to my classmates. I would keep a week's worth of sale to treat myself with cute stationary and scented rubber balls that I usually put in my pencil case. I know some of you might be able to relate to this obsession of scented rubber beads :)

I miss you sweet smelling beads!

Anyway, fast forward to today. She has shaped me to be the person I am today. I make sure that i treat people with respect, I stay grounded and I always make sure that I keep my manners in tact though i can be a bit loud sometimes :p

Many of her advice, I am passing onto my son. Respecting people is key but I also taught him to speak with respect. It is important for him to say "please" when asking for a favour, to always respect women more than anything and to always help people in need. I hope one day Tintin, you can initiate a cause and be well respected.

a

I remember an incident, I was cooking breakfast and Tintin asked "Mommy, I don't know how to cook. Would I know how to cook when I grow up?" I said "Yes baby, you will know how to cook and you can always help me in the kitchen if you want to learn". He replied "I will let you do all the cooking for now but I will cook for you when you are not able to anymore and maybe I will cook for those who doesn't know how to cook as well". Future chef this one! Matin, if you read this article one day...please remember to always be generous okay baby?

Another funny story happened in Bangkok. I gave him some pocket money for him to spend, he is only allowed to spend the money in his little cute cat coin purse (he named the cat "precious"). Knowing he had very little to spend, he was very stingy with his purchase. Kept asking me if his money is going to grow (LOL) but there was just one incident that really touched my heart. We were at a street market and he saw a man with no leg. The weather was hot and the man looked very dehydrated sitting at one corner. My stingy son, my Tintin offered to buy him an ice cream with his limited pocket money. Obviously the man smiled and thanked him for the kind gesture. I guess he felt good after doing a good deed, he asked me again "can we buy him medicines for his leg so that it can grow back? Well...you tell me how to answer that one :p

Another important advice is mak kata  "Money does not grow on trees. It is either you work hard or you marry a Millionaire". The latter is more of a fairy-tale and I am an independent woman. So, work hard it is hahaha. It is very important for me that my son understands this teaching. I always tell him, if he wants something, he has to work for it. Every time he asks me to buy him something, I would tell him the amount of hours i need to be at the office for him to get what he wants. We would negotiate. Sadly my negotiation skill needs brushing :p but regardless, he knows it is not easy :)

Anyway, raising a child is a challenge. They are mischievous in their own way but it is a reward that money cant buy. They can give you pure indescribable happiness and joy.

This is what we call "Love Hate relationship" :p
I get people asking me how does he get so clever? umm...hello? from me? but since that answer needs a lot of convincing, I usually share with them the nutrition I feed him. 80% of his intake is actually from his milk. I wasn't given the opportunity to breastfeed him therefore selecting the best formula is essential. You may think I am simply sharing this to advertise but this is not a paid post. Just so happen, I do feed Matin Dutch Lady Create 4-6 years old when I was approached by Dutch Lady to write ‘Mak Kata, Saya Anak Bijak’ bloggers contest. So, writing this is fairly easy.

ART attack! Perfectly blue for Dutch Lady ;)
So, yes! Good nutritional value is important. The Dutch Lady 4-Step Nutri Plan contains 5X DHA*.
It is a tailored nutrition program for children from 1 to 6+ years of age to encourage child’s smart milestones and learning. Here is an article from PubMed and it confirms that DHA plays a big role.
"Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is essential for the growth and functional development of the brain in infants. DHA is also required for maintenance of normal brain function in adults. The inclusion of plentiful DHA in the diet improves learning ability, whereas deficiencies of DHA are associated with deficits in learning" source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10479465

Never letting go!
My pillow substitute
Anyway, the only problem i have now is to get him off bottle feeding! He doesn't want to switch to a regular cup. As much as i want him to quit bottle feeding, he loves his milk and baby bottle too much! I got back fired when he said "Mommy kata kalau nak tinggi and strong kena minum susu. Tintin nak big like daddy!" hahaha and today he told me that he wants to have his own baby so that his baby can grow big and strong with MILK!
He is already thinking of getting his own baby, should I be worried? :p
Watch the video if you don't believe me!

SOULMATE: There is one for everyone

How often are we lucky enough to find our soulmate?

When you love someone, that does not mean you have found your soulmate but when you have found your soulmate, it is very easy to love that person.

It is just something words cant describe but the attraction is just there, so strong that it is beyond control.
The person just affects you so intensely, he/she just takes your breath away.

So, have you met your soulmate?
Here are some ways for you to know that you have met your match.

#1 You are comfortable being you
The amount of comfort you have between each other is just magical even sometimes it is out of mind crazy. Have you ever met one person that you feel like you can share everything with? You are just connecting at a deeper level. When you know you can share your dirty little secrets, your fears, your fantasies then you know there is something special between you two.

#2 Indescribable attraction
When you are with each other, the attraction between you two is just uncontrollable. It is like nothing else matters, like the world is left with only the two of you and your body are just drawn together to populate the earth. It is usually more than a physical attraction but emotionally as well. The things the other person do or say just wow you over and you feel like you are in a dream land.

#3 Chemistry is real
Love at first sight does happen but not often. When you look at that person, you just feel intensely attracted but i am also talking about the chemistry that cant be seen or felt. It is an emotional connection that can't be explained. You know there's chemistry when you have only met that person for 5 minutes but it feels like you have known each other forever. It is never awkward between you two and you just feel excited to share even the little things in life. Basically, just the thought about that person makes you smile.

#4 Care scare
You just care. You do. Sometimes you just feel overly worried about that person. You just care too much. As obsessive as that may sound, you also know how to comfort each other with your crazy ways that can make the other person smile. You find comfort in each other and that...rarely happen.

#5 Laughter
Laughter is the best medicine for happiness. You just enjoy the silliness of each other, no matter how lame that person is but he/she can instantly reverse your mood. It is just something magical. Have you ever been alone and suddenly you realize that you are smiling to yourself? The thought of him/her just lingers on and on and on even when you try to stop.

#6 The universe is talking
FATE. it is just fate that you met each other and no matter what, you always bump into each other. There's no running away and when you meet, it is an instant bond even if you have not been in touch for years.

So, have you met your soulmate?
If you have, do leave a comment below :)

Keep running on the track of no end

I have to admit that I have been feeling a little bit sluggish in the past months. Almost depressed I would say. I felt helpless. My father was ill, I was not well and I had to put a pause to everything.

If you know me well enough then you know that I am very ambitious and there are a lot of things I would like to achieve but here I am, settled on life. Now, don't get me wrong. I am not complaining because more than anything, I am very grateful with what I have and to be able to spend most of my time with my little Tintin is absolutely a dream come true.

A mother's love is unconditional and it saddens me when I cant give him what he wants, I am with him most of the times and it makes both of us happy but there are times when he asks me requests that I am not able to fulfill. Of course my husband is more than able to contribute but I also want to be able to independently give Tintin what he wants.
Well, I don't know if that make sense to you but it does to me.

You must think I am crazy. I know. It is every mother's dream to be a stay at home mom, it is also a dream of mine but perhaps not yet. I have to sacrifice to give more and when the time comes, it will all be worth it.

I am inspired to write this from the dream I had last night. In my dream, I was running...running really fast that I felt the adrenaline runs through my body. I woke up with palpitations from all the rush. It was a track of no end but it felt great. I felt like i achieved something..something big. The feeling was so amazing that it affects me so much today and it really changed my perspective. Now, I have to make it a reality.

I want to be able to contribute to something that gives meaning. I want to keep on running. There is just something out there that is yet to be discovered.

I am writing this as reminder to myself and to all my readers that it is all within you. Life is short and you are running out of time. Life is like a never ending marathon.
It is always about who is faster to reach the finishing line.

Have you discovered what you are made for ?
I am certainly making a start today to understand more and bring out my full potential.

DONT FORGET TO CATCH POKE ETHICS!

I am inspired to write about this topic today because the moment i woke up, my Facebook wall is full of rants, hate and comments on the new game/ app Pokemon GO. I have got to admit this. I freaking love the game!!!! It is fun to play especially with my son and family but it is pretty addictive so you got to set some rules and respect the people who are not in the Pokemon Go world and Vice Versa. Respect the game and the creator. They are not to one to be blamed but the people who does not know to set barriers.

Now, i have set some ground rules to myself when i am on my geek mode with Pokemon Go. You all might not agree to my opinion, but this is what i have listed down.

#1 DONT PLAY WHILE DRIVING
Well, it is obvious isn't it? Don't harm yourself and others.Switch off the app while driving. If there is an open incense spot (a party where a possible 30+ species of Pokemon might appear) and you want to be there, plan your route and only switch on the app once you have safely parked your car (at a parking space, not by the roadside or by the yellow line) . The creator of Pokemon Go actually wants to promote exercise and you are suppose to play while walking, NOT DRIVING! Even the character of your Pokemon GO is walking. Break some sweat. Come on!

#2 USE YOUR EARS, NOT YOUR EYES WHEN IN PUBLIC AREA
You do not need to set eyes on the screen, there is a beep sound when a Pokemon appear. If you did not notice, pay attention to the sound and vibration. Of course, turn on your sound and make sure your phone is set to vibrate. Respect the people around you especially if you are at the mall. You don't want to annoy people by stepping on their feet or hit a baby stroller.

#3 KEEP IT FUN AND RESPECTFUL
Yes! We are all competitive. If you are not, something must be wrong with you and you might live in depression hahaha. It is fun to be competitive but know your barrier. Do not use foul language when you are pissed that you missed the Pikachu and your friend/s didn't. In short don't Chow H** / C*b*i your friends because i have heard it hahaha. There might be kids listening nearby ish ish ish!!!

#4 GET YOUR BALLS IN ADVANCE..I MEAN POKEBALLS!
Everything works better with proper planning. Collect your Pokeballs in advance at a non public place where there is less people. I am lucky that I have a Pokestation near my condo unit, so i get to top up every few minutes (such a geek). Find a Pokestation nearest to you and start collecting! Do this and you will not hit people in the malls while looking for a Pokestation.

#5 KEEP YOUR SPIRIT UP AS A GROUP
This is my favourite part about the game/ app. As cliche as it may sound, it gets people together and it creates a special bond. Dont believe me? convince your partner/ siblings to play and tell me how it goes. Don't judge until you have tried getting into the Pokecraze. If you enjoyed collecting stamps as a kid then you will surely love the game. You can share you rare Pokemons and so as your friends/ family.

#6 RESPECT THE NON PLAYERS
If you have a social gathering with your friends who are not players, don't bore them with your Pokemon GO. You will look like a geek who has no life (when in fact your life is awesome...i just caught a rare breed! Of course i know). You can convince them to join you once and if they are not interested, let them be :) Just enjoy the piece of cake and start a normal conversation like you always do.

#7 THERE IS A GREATER LIFE....IN THE REAL WORLD
Don't get too hooked up until you forget and ditched your friends/family. Plan your GO time and keep your social life in tact. Keep a good reputation...do not make us Pokemon GO addicts look like losers will you? hahaha

#8 PLEASE DON'T ABANDON YOUR KIDS
If you plan to focus on playing, please don't bring your kids along. Let them stay at home or if you need to bring them along, get them to enjoy the game with you.

#8 JUST ENJOY THE GAME, KEEP YOUR SOCIAL LIFE IN TACT, RESPECT THE GROUND RULES AND HAVE FUN!

Now, lets go catch some rare ones!
